Bathroom Stall Tears: Part I, 2022, Single-channel video, 04:48

The “Bathroom Stall Tears” video series, which is a part of the “Grandma Nightclub”, opens the door to a more intimate space for expression and reflections by capturing my personal childhood memories. This video is meant to be watched in the bathroom stall of the “Grandma Nightclub” installation.

In “Bathroom Stall Tears: Part I”, I honor my grandmother’s selfless acts/small sacrifices made in daily life and her Japanese heritage. While I often employ humor as an entry point and coping mechanism, the absence of humor in the “Bathroom Stall Tears” works compels the audience to sit with the stories of sacrifice told through my personal relationship with my grandmother.

The “Grandma Nightclub” is one video installation component of a future “Grandma Entertainment Franchise (GEF)” installation that will also include a grandma day spa and a grandma amusement park.
